Who's who and what?
How do we get our information? Simple we train with them (in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands and US) and we investigate them (Youtube, information from students...).
Not a real federation but earned being listed because of just one reason: Boaz Aviram. Loyal to the teachings of Imi Lichtenfeld.
Mr. Aviram teaches Krav Maga in 20 hours, the way it was intended. No extra's, just Krav Maga, Pure Krav Maga. His book "Use of the human body as a weapon" should be on every Krav Maga practitioners bookshelf. It will give you the insights you need to be able to understand Krav Maga. By reading the book you will understand that some of the above federations raped Krav Maga.
We also recommend the DVD set Pure Krav Maga - Self Defence Mastery. The series show the complete education of Ms. Kathysue Dorey Pohrte who is now a respected US based Krav Maga instructor.
Website: http://www.uw-veiligheid.be/ (Dutch, English site offline untill 2012).
The European Krav Maga Academy has earned the status of federation by expanding and setting the standard for Krav Maga in Europe.
In 2011 this group has set up 4 new schools in Belgium and the Netherlands. They are forming new professional instructors to open more locations in 2012.
The EKMA has 3 full time professional instructors (Chief Instructor Luc Van Laere, René Debecker & Kris Corre) ensuring constant quality control and thus high quality Krav Maga education.
The education Level is very good to excellent. The EKMA offers professional Krav Maga education. There are only a few schools in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. HQ in Antwerp.
Style: the real deal with some other Close Combat influences, mostly TIOR (Techniques d'Interventions Opérationnelles Rapprochées).
The KMSDF has been formed to help and support the European Krav Maga Academy instructors. We are not sure how this affects the EKMA itself. Fact is that The KMSDF uses the same logo, has the same Chief instructor and instructors and operates from the EKMA headquarters in Antwerp. We mailed CI Van Laere to get more info on this.
Update: In fact the KMSDF is a legal instrument used to insure all EKMA members and provide all sorts of backup to EKMA instructors.
The IKMF claims to be the largest federation. It's ex Chief Instructor, Eyal Yanilov who now has his own federation called KMG also claims to have been the KM founder's (Imi Lichtenfeld) right hand for over 15 years and the only person holding KM highest level and Founder's Diploma of Excellence. You will find out later that he isn't the only one.
The IKMF is an international organization with branches world wide. The education level is average, we have spotted some poor instructors on youtube.
Style: Hit and run, some ineffective techniques. Referred to as Fitness Krav Maga.
Led by Hayim Gidon (Haim Gidon). Also Haim Gidon claims to have been granted a 8th Dan by the grandmaster himself.
The education level in Israel is ok, we don't know about the education level in other countries. A lot of hugging techniques because of the MMA influence.
Style: Effective, influenced by BJJ, Thaiboxing. Martial Arts approach.
Darren Levine, 6th degree black belt and (claiming to be) recipient of a Founder’s Diploma from Krav Maga creator Imi Lichtenfeld, founded the company. The company certifies instructors and oversees quality control at hundreds of authorized Krav Maga Worldwide training centers in the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Europe.
The education level is average to good.
Style: The style can be described as rather usefull. The setup however is typically Mc Dojo, They dragged in useless technique to thicken the syllabus.
Led by Grandmaster Haim Zut, the highest ranking Krav Maga instructor in the world. The leading masters of fighting arts in Israel have honored Haim with the rank of Dan 10 based upon his commitment to the teaching of the art. Not only is Haim a Krav Maga Grandmaster, he is also an educator who serves as a model for his students, focusing with special care on those underprivileged youths to whom he devotes his time.
At the age of 71 he continues to teach Krav Maga and lead the most well-respected Krav Maga Federation in the world (Krav Maga International-Kapap).
The education Level is very good to excellent, there are only a few schools.
Style: Difficult to say, some techniques are useless.
After Eyal Yanilov was put on the IKMF sidetrack he started his own federation. Krav Maga global has the same problems as the IKMF, the techniques are not evolved and therefore sometimes quite useless.
The education level is average.
Style: Hit and run, some ineffective techniques. Reffered to as Fitness Krav Maga. We have seen Yanilov make some huge mistakes on knife and gun disarm techniques.
The ECKMF is led by Y Giladi who served in Belgium in de mid 80's. There are no claims of relationship with Imi Lichtenfeld, neither does the chairman of the federation grant himself a Master title, in fact, there are no Master titles in this federation. The idea is that Krav Maga is a evolutive system hence you can't be a Master.
Their only purpose today is to be an instructor federation. Most of the capable instructors are now part of the European Krav Maga Academy led by the ECKMF chief instructors, Luc Van Laere.
The education level is very good, there are only a few Instructors. The federation is not affiliated with Moni Aizik. It seems that they have chosen to use the word 'commando' because of their military background.
Style: the real deal with some other Close Combat influences as most of the instructors served as military or police instructors in Israel, France.
Alberto Merlo's IPP Krav Maga is in fact a school with lots of branches throughout Italy. There are some US based instructors, but most of the activities take place in Italy.
According to the website IPP Krav Maga is associated with different other federations.
We can only quote Marcel Dor, Master Instructor from the ECKMF: "His techniques are realistic and he knows his stuff, something I can't say about every Krav Maga Instructor". It only seems that Merlo offers "associate" titles to members of affiliated organisations only to make his organisation bigger.
Established by Imi Lichtenfeld's successor in the IDF, the late Eli Aviksar. A stable organisation that produced a lot of excellent Krav Maga instructors. They call their style Krav Magen.
Since a few years Kami left the path of original Krav Maga and tends towards a Martial Arts approach.
The federation led by Richard Douieb. Douieb made a lot of claims in the past. The fact is that is Krav Maga is well spread and that it look a lot like the KMWW style. To our opinion he uses too much Japanese, his syllabus looks like a Karate curriculum.
The education level is average.
Style: a lot of ineffective techniques. Martial Arts approach.
The BKMF seems to operate under the FEKM, or at least under the supervision of Richard Douieb's students. Stable, good education.
The education level is better than the level of the federation they operate under.
Style: some ineffective techniques.
Another Chief instructor unable to hide his Martial Arts background. Torregrossa claims to hold a 5th dan and calls himself a Master... probably in deception.
The education level is poor, some Krav Maga but mosly a weird mix of MA and dangerous interpretations of KM.
Established by Philippe Kaddouch.
Style: no info yet
Established by Patrice Elophé and Philippe Briand. Trained by Alain Cohen. Elophé and Briand left Cohen to hook up with IPP and the ECKMF.
Style: Martial Arts related. Too many boxing techiques.
The education level is ok to average.
Established by Thierry Cimkauskas.
Style: no info yet
Lior Offenbach used to be on the VIP list of this site. Since a few years he got a bit off the path. His Krav Maga is watered down.
Established bij Moshe Katz who trained under Itay Gil.
